• O C T. II. • John Zorn — “Black”
From the 1992 album Elegy.
When I first heard whatever the metallic crash was after the squeal (believe me, you'll know it when you hear it), I nearly fell out of my chair. Makes me think of Leatherface slamming that door in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Some prime creepy atmospheric stuff from one of my favorite Zorn albums.

Yes, well, that was creepy as hell. I'm glad it's 1:49 pm and not am, or I might be REALLY freaked out right now. Well done.
ReplyDeleteGod one. I just got done leaving the longest comment of my life over at X-E and I was listening to this while I was typing. It's about 4:45am right now, dark, and spooky in my apt. My toilet's got this weird thing where it randomly runs for about 10 seconds or so and stops. You never know when it's going to happen but when it does it's loud. Sure enough it kicked in right in the middle of the track. Between John Zorn and my toilet, both me and the cat got ourselves a nice little jolt.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I remember the toilet of the house I grew up in (a 1920s house that started off as an old mining cabin) used to do the same thing. That sound was referred to by my family as "The Phantom Pooper".
ReplyDeleteNice choice. I've been aware of John Zorn, but don't know if I've actually heard anything by him before. I listened to this while I was sitting alone in my cold, semi-darkened bedroom at (almost) 4 AM—which is probably the ideal environment for it. Thanks for making my night a little more eerie.
ReplyDeleteZorn is one of those artists that has such a massive catalog of work, and done so much stuff over his career in so many styles that its kinda hard to say what the best starting point is. If you dig this track, I'd recommend the albums Elegy or I.A.O. - Music in Sacred Light. He's mostly known for his crazy saxophone skronk, but he's written everything from dub, chamber jazz based on traditional Jewish music, classical, and my personal favorite — batshit insane free jazz heavily influenced by japanese grindcore.
