• O C T. III. • Black Sabbath — “Black Sabbath”
From the 1970 album Black Sabbath.
A tale of evil supernatural visitation from the first proper heavy metal album that never fails to bring a chill. Pouring rain, a ringing bell, cracking thunder... and then that massive guitar riff; that sinister devil's tritone! A groundbreaking song that is still absolutely perfect forty years later.

Great choice, old man! By far my favorite Sabbath track. And yes, the devil's tritone is in full effect. I trust you've heard the Type O Negative cover. Back around the time that both Peter Steele and Dio died, I did a little tribute to both of them, playing some Dio stuff as well as Type O's cover of this. Kind of tied everything together.
ReplyDeleteYep, Type O's cover (especially the alternate lyrics version) is definitely one of the more original interpretations I've heard. Of particular historical note is the awesome cover done by Japanese proto-metal group Flower Travellin' Band. It came out later on in 1970, making it (alongside the cover of "War Pigs" by South African band Suck) one of, if not the very first Black Sabbath covers released. It's got some broken-English issues, but it, along with Flower Travellin' Band's other early work, was phenomenally heavy for it's time.
ReplyDeleteVideo isn't working for me, but good choice.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... unlike that removed Atomic Rooster vid, this one is working just fine for me. Dunno what's up with that.
